A cavity is a small area of decay on the enamel of one of your teeth. Most small cavities can be repaired by your dentist in a simple procedure that removes the decayed enamel and replaces it with a filling. The type of filling your dentist recommends will be largely based on the tooth’s primary function and whether it is part of your smile.

Amalgam fillings are also very durable and less expensive than gold. Their dark color means that amalgam fillings are almost never used on teeth in your smile.

Composite fillings are made from a resin material that can be color matched and placed in a single procedure.

If you have a cavity on one or more of your teeth, you should have it repaired as soon as possible. If it is not addressed in a timely manner the decay to advance to compromise more enamel or the root of the tooth. This could require repairing the tooth with a crown or a root canal. That is why it is always best to see your dentist regularly and strive to prevent cavities from ever forming.
