To help protect your teeth and gums from dental damage, it is important to have preventive measures in place. Beyond brushing and flossing your teeth daily and eating a healthy diet, it can be helpful to have dental sealants placed on your molars and premolars.

Dental sealants are thin layers of plastic that are applied directly to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. When your molars have dental sealants in place, they are up to 80% less likely to show any signs of tooth decay. This is because sealants are resistant to harmful acids that would otherwise erode your tooth enamel.

Dental sealants are usually applied to the back teeth of children as soon as their molars begin to grow in. Studies done by the CDC have shown that children are three times less likely to suffer from cavities on protected teeth. Sealants are more effective the earlier they are applied, however adults who have problems with cavities, or conversely have very healthy back teeth can also benefit from having sealants applied.
